As a child I remember my mom putting a verse of scripture on our fridge. I wondered why it was there. I would see her walk by it, place her hand on the fridge, and read the words. My child brain wasn’t sure what caused her to do this and why she prayed over our fridge so much, but a few weeks later, I did.

My dad was a traveling Evangelist and funds were often tight. That particular month, we were low on groceries, so the verse my mom put on the fridge was Malachi 3:10. That week, my dad had a revival in a nearby town. He came home with just enough to buy our school lunches, getting us through another week. I remember my mom telling my dad that God wouldn’t just provide, but that He’d supply more than enough for us. She was believing for the full scripture and promise of God to take place.

Saturday came and we got a call from the Pastor of the church my dad had preached at. He wanted to let us know that his church members decided to bless my dad with groceries. Later that day, two van-loads of groceries pulled up to our house and delivered more than enough. We had so much that we even gave some away. It was a moment in my life that I will never forget; the Scriptures came alive to me that day. Looking across our house and seeing piles of groceries was confirmation that the Word of God was TRUE.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. ‍

So let’s dive into three ways we can use Scripture as a powerful tool for breakthrough.

Be Encouraged by the Word
You can take verses of scripture and display it in the places you frequent the most. I display them in my home, on my fridge, on my desktop, and in my planner. I spend time reading the words daily and speaking them over my family and myself. I also like to post verses on Insta stories and other social media platforms. Then they become like a motto for my day, keeping me grounded. This motivates me to continue forward through the highs and lows. His Word speak what is true and they help us realize what’s really going on inside of us.

Fight with the Word
There have been times where Scripture has corrected me and caused me to halt before detouring. This is hard—and sometimes even painful—but every time I read verses that convict my heart, the Word becomes more alive in me, helping me trust it more.

Scripture is more than just God-inspired words, it’s the Sword of the Spirit. (Ephesians 6:17) This means we can use it to defeat the giants of fear, insecurity, and pain by claiming the word over our lives. When the enemy tries to slip into your thoughts, that’s the best time to utilize the Sword of the Spirit. Reminding the enemy of who God is, who you are in Christ and His promises is a sure-fire way of taking back what the enemy may have stolen or is trying to take from you. I’ve tried fighting my battles by venting, isolating myself, or even reading motivational materials, but nothing works like Scripture. Knowing that the Word of God is a weapon against my flesh and the giants facing me gives me a strong sense of VICTORY.

Pray the Word Courageously
2 Tim 3:17 says God wants to use His word to prepare us and equip us for His good work. He has so much He wants us to do for His Kingdom. The most inspirational and motivational way I use Scripture is in my prayer time. When I’m praying, I speak out His word in my prayers, reminding God that I can’t do this without His help. He is there to prepare us and equip us as strong vessels to be used for His glory. So when I’m anxious I’ll pray, “Lord, your word says to be anxious for nothing but to pray about everything.” (Phil 4:6) It encourages my Spirit, and I begin to feel God’s arms around me as we courageously war together in prayer.

We have this promise as we seek to devour the Word this month!

Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

So for me, knowing scripture is like having a superpower that only God can inspire!
